To Sled Or Not To Sled

After I completed building my droid I had to figure out how to take him places. Putting him in my Jeep was not a problem because he could just stand up in the back and I could just strap him in. It wasn’t until I decided to build a second droid and had to get a new vehicle is when I started to think about how to travel with two droids in the future. I looked for a while for an enclosed trailer that was in my budget and didn’t require too much work. Luckily I knew someone who was selling one for a great price and it was in great condition. Problem solved! Right?... Well it wasn’t until I had an event to do that the parking wasnt going to be ideal for a trailer and the droid was now unable to stand up in my suv that I had to come up with another solution. I remembered seeing a picture of a droid sled that someone had made to lay their droid down in the vehicle for transport. A quick search on astromech.net and I was staring at my needed solution. Time and money being the hurtles in my way, I took some quick measurements of my droid and off to the shop I went to see what I had for materials. As luck would have it, I had just enough wood and hardware to make something that could work. I spent the rest of the day measuring and crafting the new sled and by the end of the day I was excited to see if it would work. After a night of thinking the design through, I awoke with new ideas to make it better. I spent half of the day adding wheels, straps and other small updates. Finally it was time to try it out. I loaded my droid on the sled, strapped him in and drug it around the house. It worked perfectly. Now it was time to load him in the car to see how loading and unloading was going to be. Again a perfect test. So now all that was needed was to give it real test at an event. That day came and I was ready to go. That event proved to be a perfect trial run. We unloaded the sled/cart and started uphill to the event ,so thankful I added wheels. Got inside, unstrapped him and enjoyed the event. When we where finished for the day loading him up was no problem. This was a perfect solution for my small car for future events and I have my trailer for bigger venues. I couldn’t be happier for a simple and very useful build and I would suggest anyone with small vehicles to look into this option for transportation for their droid. ”Happy Building!!”
